From 1939 onwards, a huge number of trials were carried out to test different weights (from 4g to 15g, not counting the 3g aluminum version), different diameters (from 20 to 31mm), etc.... These non-Turin tests in cupro-nickel were intended, among other things, for the preparation of the 5, 10 or 20 Pétain francs, which were never actually issued (except, of course, for the 5 Francs 1941).The right-hand side of this test was eventually used for Indochina coins; the reverse was that used for the 20 Francs Turin series from 1929 to 1939.
The assay is surrounded by numerous variants, all of which can be found in the Numista catalog.
It would seem that this test has adopted the wide listel instead of having a wide listel and a fine listel variant.
The trial only shows a different workshop, the cornucopia on the left.
This is enough to determine the workshop, since the cornucopia is the symbol of the director of the Paris mint.
There are trials in aluminum, others in cupro-nickel with large and medium diameters, and for each diameter except the small one, a variation of listel, wide and thin.
Sheet numbers are assigned in the line comments, and photos are dedicated to them here.
Note: the large module has a heavyweight variety, fine listel.
1: Plug size, weight remains unchanged, but goes up to 4.5 grams; specimens of the latter weight appear to be unprecedented.
2: 1 mm less than normal, weight unchanged.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Pattern préparation de la 5 francs Pétain (petit module) 1939 from France made of Copper-nickel weighing 4.42 g is that it was designed by the French sculptor and engraver, Auguste C. L. Pétain. Pétain was a prominent figure in French numismatics and was responsible for designing many French coins during the early 20th century. This particular coin was designed in 1939, but it was never officially released into circulation. Instead, it was only produced as a pattern coin, which makes it a rare and valuable collector's item for numismatists.
