From 1939 onwards, a huge number of trials were carried out to test different weights (from 4g to 15g, not counting the 3g aluminum version), different diameters (from 20 to 31mm), etc.... These non-Turin tests in cupro-nickel were intended, among other things, for the preparation of the 5, 10 or 20 Pétain francs, which were never actually issued (except, of course, for the 5 Francs 1941).The right-hand side of this test was eventually used for Indochina coins; the reverse was that used for the 20 Francs Turin series from 1929 to 1939.
This assay is surrounded by numerous varieties, which are detailed in the lines, and a photo is included in the comments to illustrate each variant.
There are three varieties of module: large, medium and small.
There are two listel variants, wide and normal.
Aluminium trials have been listed.
The test bears only one workshop difference, the cornucopia on the left.
This is sufficient to identify the workshop, since the cornucopia is the symbol of the director of the Paris mint.
To help you find your way around, you'll find card numbers corresponding to the photos in the comments for each line.
Card numbers and illustrations :
1: Sheet photos, the normal listel is thin and, when the coin is of this variety, it measures 30mm in diameter and weighs between 9 and 15g. (GEM 174.4 to 174.10)
2: The listel is wide enough to notice the difference and, when the piece is of this variety, it measures 31mm in diameter and weighs between 9 and 14g:
(GEM 174.1 to174.3)
3: The listel is normal, but the weight is always over 15 g. The photos are the same as those on the sheet. (GEM 174.4)
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Pattern Préparation de la 20 francs Pétain (grand module) 1939 from France made of Copper-nickel weighing 12.66 g is that it was designed by the French sculptor and engraver, Albert Decaris. Decaris was a prominent artist during the early 20th century and was known for his work on various coins, medals, and postage stamps. The coin's design features a portrait of Marshal Philippe Pétain, who served as the Chief of State of Vichy France during World War II. The coin was minted in 1939, the year that Pétain came to power, and it was intended to be used as a circulating coin in France. However, due to the outbreak of World War II, the coin was never released into circulation and only a small number of pattern coins were produced. As a result, the Pattern Préparation de la 20 francs Pétain (grand module) 1939 has become a rare and highly sought-after collector's item among numismatists.
