From 1939 onwards, a huge number of trials were carried out to test different weights (from 4g to 15g, not counting the 3g aluminum version), different diameters (from 20 to 31mm), etc.... These non-Turin tests in cupro-nickel were intended, among other things, for the preparation of the 5, 10 or 20 Pétain francs, which were never actually issued (except, of course, for the 5 Francs 1941).The right-hand side of this test was eventually used for Indochina coins; the reverse was that used for the 20 Francs Turin series from 1929 to 1939.
The assay is surrounded by numerous variants; the cards are all in the Numista catalog.
Some are in aluminum.
Others in cupro-nickel, with large, medium and small diameters, each with a different listel, wide or thin.
The test piece bears only one workshop mark, the cornucopia on the left.
This is sufficient to identify the workshop, since the cornucopia is the symbol of the director of the Paris mint.
Card numbers are assigned in the line comments, and photos are dedicated to them here.
Note: the large module has a heavyweight variety, fine listel.
1: The listel is thin, and the weights, diameters and photos are the same as those shown on this sheet.
Weight varies between 8 and 6.5g (GEM 174.16 to 174.19).
2: The listel is sufficiently wide for the difference to be noticeable, at such a weight that the diameter is no longer 25 mm but 26 mm, the weight varies from 8 to 6.5g (GEM 174.13 to 174.15).
Interesting fact
This coin was designed by French sculptor and engraver, Auguste C. L. Pétain, who was also a prominent military leader during World War I. The coin features a portrait of Pétain on one side and the French national emblem on the other. It was minted in 1939, just a year before Pétain became the leader of the French State, a collaborationist regime established during World War II. Despite its historical significance, the coin was never widely circulated and remains a rare and valuable collector's item today.
