Comment
The gens Pompeia was a plebeian family, and at the same time a consular family, which appears to derive its name from the town of Pompeii in Campania. It furnished the Republic of Rome with several illustrious citizens. The moneyer honours here his two grandfathers, both consul in the same year.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a portrait of Quintus Pompeius Rufus, a Roman politician and military leader, on one side, and a depiction of the goddess Victory on the other. This coin was minted during a time of political turmoil in Rome, and the image of Victory may have been intended to symbolize the triumph of the Roman Republic over its enemies.
