Comment
The gens Junia was one of the most celebrated families at Rome. The gens may originally have been patrician. The family was already prominent in the last days of the Roman monarchy. Lucius Junius Brutus was the nephew of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the seventh and last King of Rome, and on the expulsion of Tarquin in 509 BC, he became one of the first consuls of the Roman Republic. The moneyer is here the well known Brutus, one of the most famous Caesar's murderer. Orphan at a young age, Brutus was adopted by his uncle Quintus Servilius Caepio and not by Julius Caesar as it is believed. Brutus then used the name Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus before taking back his birth name.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a portrait of Marcus Junius Brutus, one of the conspirators who assassinated Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The coin was minted in 54 BC, just a few years before Brutus's infamous act, and it is believed that the coin was minted to promote Brutus's political career. The coin's design also includes the abbreviation "BRVTVS," which stands for "Brutus," and "AHALA," which is an ancient Roman goddess associated with fertility and prosperity. This coin is a rare and valuable artifact that provides a unique glimpse into the political and social climate of ancient Rome during the late Republic period.
