Comment

The gens Junia was one of the most celebrated families at Rome. The gens may originally have been patrician. The family was already prominent in the last days of the Roman monarchy. Lucius Junius Brutus was the nephew of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the seventh and last King of Rome, and on the expulsion of Tarquin in 509 BC, he became one of the first consuls of the Roman Republic.

The moneyer is here the well known Brutus, one of the most famous Caesar's murderer. Orphan at a young age, Brutus was adopted by his uncle Quintus Servilius Caepio and not by Julius Caesar as it is believed. Brutus then used the name Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus before taking back his birth name.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features an image of Marcus Junius Brutus, one of the assassins of Julius Caesar, on the obverse (front) side, while the reverse (back) side bears the image of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. This coin was minted in 54 BC, just a few years before Caesar's assassination in 44 BC. The coin's design serves as a symbol of the political tensions and conflicts of the time, as Brutus and his co-conspirators sought to overthrow Caesar's rule and restore the Roman Republic.
