Comment

On 1811 started on Uruguay, the revolution against Spain Colonial regimen, so several coins were issued to celebrate the anniversary. Jos{e Gervasio Artigas was the main leader of the Revolution, and is considered the most important hero of the country.

Only 1 drawing was made in presence of Artigas, when he was 82 years old; therefore other artists only could think of the real aspect of Artigas; the drawings made using coal technique by Juan Manuel Blanes is considered the most accurate image, and used on coins.

The second image was used for this coin, the other is the one used for many previous coins with Artigas bust.

This issue was minted in Kmemnica, Poland.

Interesting fact

This coin was designed by Uruguayan artist, Mariana Pellegrino, and features an image of a horse on its obverse side. The horse is depicted in a galloping pose, symbolizing freedom and independence, which is fitting given the coin's name and the fact that it was issued to commemorate Uruguay's independence bicentennial. The coin's reverse side features an image of the Uruguayan coat of arms.
