This particular type was only issued as individual pieces since the 2015 annual sets featured the Rank-Broadley obverse. This design was also struck in silver piedfort and gold proof, while the copper-nickel fifth portrait also features the denomination. Issue limit: 4,200.© The Royal Mint, 2015
There were three distinct types issued for the 2015 Battle of Britain commemorative featuring three different obverses, two different compositions, with just one type being struck for circulation. We are indebted to the numismatic website Change Checker and Numista member Sjoelund for sharing the graphic below:
The design was re-issued in 2019 as part of the 5-coin British Military set celebrating 50 years of the 50p, this time with the denomination on the obverse.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Battle of Britain 50p coin is that it features a unique design that commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a pivotal air campaign fought between the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) during World War II. The coin's design depicts a Spitfire aircraft, which was a key fighter plane used by the RAF during the battle, soaring above the English Channel, with the sun setting in the background. The coin's obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse was designed by sculptor and coin designer, Gary Breeze. The coin was issued in 2015 as a limited edition of 2,100,000, making it a sought-after collector's item among numismatists and history enthusiasts.
