Comment

In 1982, 11 years after Decimalisation Day on 15th February 1971, the word 'NEW' was removed from the denomination on the reverse, so the legend now reads 'FIVE PENCE'.

From 1981 to 1987, no five pence coins were struck for circulation since the pre-decimal shillings, with a value of 5p, were still circulating as part of the decimalisation process.

Consequently, this type can only be found in Royal Mint annual Brilliant Uncirculated & Proof sets.

Shillings, along with this larger 5p type, were demonetised in 1990 when the smaller 5p coin was introduced.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique reverse design, showcasing a depiction of a crowned shield with the inscription "ELIZABETH II • DEI GRATIA • REGINA" (Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen) surrounding it, which was specifically designed for the 1982-1984 set issue.
