Christopher Ironside designed all six new denominations for decimalisation, for which he was awarded the OBE in 1971.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 5 New Pence coin with Elizabeth II's 2nd portrait (1968-1981) is that it was the first coin to feature the new decimal denomination of 5 pence, which replaced the old 5 shilling note. This coin was also the first to feature the Queen's new portrait, which was designed by Arnold Machin, and it remained on the coin until 1981, when it was replaced by a new design.
