Comment
No five pence coins were struck for circulation between 1981 and 1987 since the old pre-decimal shillings were still circulating with a decimal value of five pence following decimalisation on the 15th of February 1971. The shillings were finally demonetized, along with this larger-type five pence, at the end of 1990 following the introduction of the new, smaller five pence piece.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 5 Pence - Elizabeth II (3rd portrait; large type) 1985-1990 coin from the United Kingdom is that it was the first coin to feature a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf. This portrait was introduced in 1985 and was used on British coins until 1990, when it was replaced by a new portrait designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin's design also features the iconic image of the Queen's crown and necklace, which has been a defining feature of British coinage for centuries.
