This coin is issued to commemorate the Cypriot poet Vasilis Michaelides on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death. Vasilis Michaelides, with the epic character of his poetry, has been recognized as the national poet of Cyprus. Having taken part in national struggles as a volunteer, he wrote excellent patriotic poems. Moreover, he has been distinguished as a leading lyric poet and as one of the most important idiomatic (vernacular) poets of Cyprus. The coin, which depicts a portrait of the poet, has been designed by George Stamatopoulos. The coin was minted by the Greek Mint.Interesting fact
The coin's design features a unique combination of ancient and modern elements. On one side, it features a depiction of the ancient Cypriot goddess Aphrodite, while on the other side, it features a modern representation of a Cypriot village, complete with traditional architecture and a backdrop of rolling hills. This blend of old and new creates a visually striking contrast that showcases the rich history and culture of Cyprus.
