Comment

This commemorative $5 coin was struck by the RAM and issued by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as part of a four coin uncirculated set. The coin set was promoting EXPO 92 which was held in New Zealand that year. This particular coin celebrates Captain James Cook, a Yorkshireman born the son of a Labourer in 1728. Captain Cook joined the British Navy in 1755 and took command of the Endeavour where in 1768 he sailed to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus. Shortly after he came upon the east coast of the north island of New Zealand on 7th October 1969. On the same voyage he also sailed up the east coast of Australia claming the continent for Britain. In two subsequent return visits to New Zealand he mapped the entire coastline of both islands.

This was front & back of the Slipcard that the four coin set came in.
