Comment
This commemorative $5 coin was struck by the RAM and issued by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as part of a four coin uncirculated set. The coin set was promoting EXPO 92 which was held in New Zealand that year. This particular coin celebrates Christopher Columbus who is probably the most renowned of all explorers. With support from the King and Queen of Spain this Italian explorer sailed westwards across the Atlantic in his three ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. He discovered what is today known as the Bahamas on 12th October 1492. It was not the East Indies he had hoped for, but Columbus had discovered the New World. He would make three further voyages of discovery to America in his lifetime. This was front & back of the Slipcard that the four coin set came in.
This is the First 3 pages of the fold out set.
These are the Final 3 pages of the fold out set.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, and features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a depiction of Columbus's ship, the Santa Maria, on the other.
