Comment
The Provisional Government ordered the production of copper 1, 3 and 5 centesimi coins in Bologna to replace coins from the Papal States. These coins were struck with reused dies originally used under Carlo Felice (a previous King of Sardinia). They still have the date 1826, but can be distinguished from the originals by the absence of mintmarks.Listed as Emilia in Krause, but catalogued as United Provinces of Central Italy which were provisional governments of Tuscany and parts of the Papal States before they joined the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1861 to form the Kingdom of Italy.
Interesting fact
The 5 Centesimi coin from the United Provinces of Central Italy (Italian States) minted in 1826 under the rule of Carlo Felice is an interesting piece of numismatic history. One fascinating fact about this coin is that it was made of copper, a metal that was widely used in coinage during that time period. The use of copper in coinage was not only a practical choice due to its durability and affordability but also a symbolic one, as copper was seen as a representation of the earth and the natural world. The fact that this coin was made of copper highlights the resourcefulness and frugality of the Italian States during this time period.
