Comment
The Provisional Government ordered the production of copper 1, 3 and 5 centesimi coins in Bologna to replace coins from the Papal States. These coins were struck with reused dies originally used under Carlo Felice (a previous King of Sardinia). They still have the date 1826, but can be distinguished from the originals by the absence of mintmarks.Catalogued by local catalogs as United Provinces of Central Italy which were provisional governments of Tuscany and parts of the Papal States before they joined the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1861 to form the Kingdom of Italy. On 27 December 1859 by decree they united and created a new province Emilia, where coins of this emission were minted at Bologna mint. It is practically impossible to bring dies from Turin and start coinage during the last days of 1859, that is why the correct date of the issue is 1860 instead of 1859-1860 as it is given by Standard Catalog of World Coins (in Emilia), Gigante and others.
Interesting fact
The 3 Centesimi coin from the United Provinces of Central Italy (Italian States) featuring Carlo Felice (Bologna) and made of copper is interesting because it was minted during a time of great political and economic change in Italy. The coin was issued in 1826, just a few years after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, which had established the United Provinces of Central Italy as a client state of the Austrian Empire. The coin's design, featuring Carlo Felice, the Duke of Parma, reflects the influence of the Austrian Empire on the Italian States during this period. Additionally, the fact that it was made of copper, a relatively inexpensive metal, suggests that the coin was intended for everyday use by the general population, rather than being a high-value coin reserved for the wealthy elite. Overall, this coin provides a fascinating glimpse into the complex political and economic landscape of 19th-century Italy.
