Comment
The Provisional Government of Tuscany commissioned the production of copper 1, 2 and 5 centesimi coins from Heaton's Mint in Birmingham. All these coins bear the date 1859, but were struck in 1860.This coins appears as Tuscany C#83 or Emilia KM#6 on some editions of the World Coin. Both are the same.
Listed as Emilia in Krause, but catalogued as United Provinces of Central Italy which were provisional governments of Tuscany and parts of the Papal States before they joined the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1861 to form the Kingdom of Italy.
Interesting fact
The 5 Centesimi coin from Victor Emmanuel II (Tuscany) in 1859 features an interesting design element - the crown on the obverse side of the coin is adorned with a small shield bearing the coat of arms of the House of Savoy, to which Victor Emmanuel II belonged. This subtle detail highlights the connection between the ruling family and the newly formed United Provinces of Central Italy, which would eventually become the Kingdom of Italy.
