Comment
The splendid scarlet tanager is one of the easiest birds to recognize in the mixed forests of eastern Canada. The male is particularly impressive, with his superb scarlet body and black wings and tail. Females are yellow-green, with gray-black wings. This magnificent bird changes color on its winter migration to South America. In late summer, the male moults and transforms considerably, swapping his crimson plumage for a plumage similar to that of the female, in olive-yellow, but retaining his black wings and tail.
The scarlet tanager builds its nest under the forest canopy, on the highest, outermost branches of oak, beech, hemlock and sometimes poplar and birch. This pretty songbird prefers rather large forests, abundantly populated with tall trees, but in Canada, it's sometimes possible to see the red or yellow feathers of the scarlet tanager in gardens or parks in spring, as well as at the time of autumn migration.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
