This superb cupronickel piece features the harlequin duck, whose male and female gracefully parade along Canada's east and west coasts. It's named for the male's multicolored plumage, reminiscent of the variegated costume of Harlequin, the Italian commedia dell'arte character. It's a charming, small duck that swims with vigor and whose call evokes the squeak of a mouse. It winters in rocky, isolated coastal regions, then migrates inland to fast-flowing streams for its breeding season, from May to September. The harlequin duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) is considered a species of conservation concern, especially in the east of the country. Relatively uncommon, it can be recognized by its distinctive call and the bright colors of the male, whose plumage is slate blue, white, black and russet brown, while the female and young are a more subdued brown, camouflaging them from predators.
Did you know?
- The harlequin duck measures between 30 and 50 centimetres long and weighs less than a kilogram.
- Its distinctive call is reminiscent of a mouse's squeak, earning it the nickname "sea mouse".
The harlequin duck spends its summers inland on the banks of fast-flowing streams. It nests on the ground or in the hollow of a tree or rock not far from the water, and usually breeds in the same spot every year. A robust diver, it hunts voraciously for fish, invertebrates and insect larvae at the bottom of streams. In autumn, it migrates to the rocky, tumultuous coasts of British Columbia, the Maritimes and Newfoundland & Labrador, where it feeds on crabs, mussels, fish eggs and other prey it snatches from shallow-water crevices.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
