With the exception of the Yukon and Nunavut, the Northern Leopard Frog is found throughout Canada. It's aptly named for its brown, greenish-brown or green skin with irregular black spots. It lives in a variety of habitats, including prairie wetlands and woodlands, where it feeds in summer. In autumn, it migrates to ponds, streams and rivers whose bottoms don't freeze over in winter. They emerge in the spring and set off in search of ponds and marshes where they can reproduce and grow their tadpoles. The Northern Leopard Frog will eat just about anything its mouth can swallow, from insects, worms and small frogs to birds and garter snakes. This hunter is in turn hunted by predators such as fish, water snakes, turtles, herons, raccoons and any frog larger than itself.
The water lily is a remarkable variety of freshwater perennial. Its broad, evergreen leaves float on the water's surface, providing a resting place for dragonflies, beetles and even small turtles. The large yellow water lily is one of nine species native to Canada, and is very widespread here. Often accompanied by a large, fragrant flower that blooms in the morning under the first rays of the sun and closes in the afternoon, this plant has its long stem anchored to the muddy bottom of lakes. Beneath the water lily, a whole host of fauna fight for the shelter provided by this plant, essential to the aquatic ecosystem.
