Comment
Uruguay's main hero, José Artigas was sure knowledge would grant freedom and progress to everybody. Thus, one of his mottos: "Sean los orientales tan ilustrados como valientes" (Be the easterners - Uruguayans - so illustrated as braves), resumed his way of think.Orientales (easterners) is a way to call the Uruguayan people, since the official name of the country does not really show a name, but the geographical situation of the country. In other words, the name República Oriental del Uruguay must be translated as a republic (situated to) eastern to Uruguay (river). Uruguay is not the name of the country, but the name of the river that makes border on the west with Argentina, making the country easterner to the river. "Uruguay" is commonly used as the name of the country, for convenience reasons.
Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga was the founder of the first and main National Library, was religious (reached presbyter grade), politic, and scientist, mostly on botanic, and was very important on the creation of the National Library and also the National University.
