Comment
From 1967 the Central Bank of Uruguay (Banco Central del Uruguay = BCU) is in charge of money emission and rules all monetary and financial matters in the country. Before that, another bank, Uruguayan Republic Bank (Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay=BROU) was on charge of emission of money: banknotes and coins, and the financial regulation was on charge of other section of the government.
BROU still exists, working as a regular bank, plus the promotion of development public and private, via finance of projects, and other actions.
Central Bank is located near the Montevideo Port, and the old main railroad station, this is the reason the painting "Construcción Portuaria" by Walter Deliotti was selected to be included in the coin
The painting, following the style of Torres García, shows stylized figures of different elements of the zone.
On the background can be seen the chimney of a ship (with "M" letter as logo), showing over the buildings of the zone, that usually are not high, 1 or 2 flats, therefore is very common to see the upper part of ships when walking on the neighbourhood.
On the front, to left, can be seen a bus with initials AMDET and to right a locomotive with initials AFE.
AMDET was a former bus company, owned by the city government, meaning Administración Municipal de Transportes (Municipal Transport Administration).
AFE is the national company of railroads, meaning Administración de Ferrocarriles del Estado (State Railroads Administration) Trains were and still are an active part of the transportation of goods, importations to all country, and exportations from it.
NOTE: in spite, this coin is silver, and has a small mintage, is commemorative circulating. The Central Bank of Uruguay released them to circulation, and then demonetized the coins.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2000 Pesos Uruguayos coin is that it features the image of a "Darwin's Rhea" (Rhea pennata), a large flightless bird that is native to Uruguay and other parts of South America. The coin's design highlights the country's rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation efforts.
