He is the author of several stories, such as "Mirgorod", "The Nose" and "Nevsky Prospekt", the comedies "The Inspector-General" and "The Wedding", the novel "Dead Souls" and a collection of religious and philosophical essays, entitled "Selected Places from Correspondence with Friends".
