Comment

The type was copied from the money of the Count of Flanders, John without Fear.  According to de Witte, the composition was specified at 5 deniers 2 ¼ grains argent-le-roi (0.407) and 50 ½  to the mark (4.84 gr.) for production at Vilvoorde in 1417, and at 6 deniers 13 grains (0.522), 4.79 grams for the 1419 production at Maastricht.
There are two varieties according to whether the A are barred (2d emission according to Elsen) or are not (1st emission).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the "Dobbelen Penninck Jans" coin is that it was issued during a time of great economic change in the Duchy of Brabant. The coin was introduced as part of a new currency system implemented by John IV in 1417, which aimed to stabilize the economy and promote trade. The use of billon, a mixture of silver and copper, was a common practice during this time period, as it allowed for the production of coins with a lower silver content, making them more affordable for everyday transactions. Despite the coin's relatively low silver content, it still held significant value and was widely used throughout the region.
