José Enrique Rodó was one of the main essayists of Uruguay, with postal relations with the most important literature men of the times. including Ruben Darío."Ariel" was his most known essay, where he speaks of the development of youth, and warns about "nordomanía", word to describe the fascination for life style of United States, and their influence on Latin America at end of 18th. century, and early 19th.
Rodó was also politician, obtaining 3 times deputation place at Government.
There is a park named after him, where is placed a huge monument on his honor.

The José Enrique Rodó 1000 Pesos Uruguayos coin was issued in 2017 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of José Enrique Rodó, a renowned Uruguayan writer and philosopher. The coin's design features an image of Rodó on one side and the Uruguayan coat of arms on the other. It's made of silver (.900) and weighs 12.5 grams.
