Reverse
The reverse design is a faithful reproduction of a 19th-century fur trade token issued by Hudson's Bay Company. Framed by an oak wreath, the company's coat of arms features elk supporters and a silver shield with the cross of St. George and four beavers (one in each quarter). The crest depicts a fox sitting on the cap of maintenance. The company motto "PRO PELLE GUTEM" (Latin for "a pelt for a skin") appears below the shield on a banderole.

Comment
In the 19th century, the Hudson's Bay Company created its own coins for the fur trade and retail. Depending on the region, the metal tokens were different, but the idea remained the same: trappers who received them as payment could use them for future purchases at the Company's trading posts. The design reproduced on this 99.99% pure silver coin is inspired by the "Made Beaver" brass tokens issued from 1860 to 1870 and used in the East Main district (southeast of Hudson Bay). These coins were named after the Company's standard monetary unit, the plue, whose value was equal to that of a prime adult male beaver pelt. The tokens were issued in four sizes, each associated with a face value: 1 plue (30 mm), 1/2 plue (27 mm), 1/4 plue (25 mm) and 1/8 plue (19 mm). The obverse of each coin was stamped with the letters "HB" (for Hudson's Bay), "EM" (East Main district) and "MB" (Made Beaver). That said, a few coins were mistakenly struck with the letters "NB".Special features
