The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the largest feline that inhabits the continent. This mammal is characterized by the variety of black spots that cover its fur, which also has different shades of colours ranging from yellow to brown.
Since pre-Columbian times, the jaguar has been revered for its strength and fierceness and also represented in innumerable cultural expressions of our continent. In indigenous mythology, he played a leading role and his roar was taken as a harbinger of fertility and well-being of ecosystems. It is distributed mainly in the tropical forest and is associated with the presence of water sources. It is a solitary predator and each individual requires between 20 thousand and 100 thousand hectares of territory to obtain their food and shelter. Due to the reduction and fragmentation of its habitat, the decrease of its potential prey and its illegal hunting for the trade of its skin and fangs, the national legislation has classified the jaguar as a "Near Threatened" species to raise awareness among the population about the current situation of this feline in our country.
