Comment
The white-winged guan (Penelope albipennis) is the most threatened of the five species of guans of its genus that inhabit our country. It was considered extinct for more than 100 years until its rediscovery in 1977, carried out by Gustavo del Solar, John O'Neill and Sebastián Chinchay. It is an endemic species from northern Peru, which lives between 400 and 1400 masl, in a narrow broken strip of dry forest that extends between Cajamarca, Lambayeque and Piura. Currently, its population ranges between 300 and 415 copies. Most of them live mainly in the Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge (Lambayeque) and the Dry Forest Regional Conservation Area of Salitral-Huarmaca (Piura). qDue to the degradation of its surroundings and its poaching, the white-winged guan is classified as a "Critically Endangered" (CR) species by national legislation and is included in Appendix I of the CITES Convention.Interesting fact
