Comment
The Suri (Rhea pennata) is the largest non-flying bird in America; can reach up to 1.5 m in height and weigh up to 30 kg. This species, whose diet is predominantly herbivorous, inhabits the heights of Bolivia, Chile and Peru (Puno, Moquegua and Tacna). It is estimated that the population of suris in Peru does not exceed 350 individuals. The use of his vast plumage, during the Incas, was intended exclusively for royalty. The rock art, iconography and myths of the Altiplano reflect the status of a symbol that the suri had for the Andean peoples, who considered it as an announcer of the rain. The suri is threatened by illegal hunting and gathering of its eggs, feathers and parts; therefore, it was included in Appendix I of the CITES Convention and classified as "Critical Hazard" by the Peruvian legislation.Interesting fact
The Darwin's Rhea coin features an image of a rhea, a large flightless bird that is native to South America, including Peru. The coin's design highlights the unique wildlife of the region and celebrates the biodiversity of the continent.
