Comment

As the Boers were fleeing the English invasion into the ZAR, they took with them their gold, blank planchets and coin press. During the war, coins were issued in the field and as there was no time to stamp the coins, they were given out blank to the soldiers. There are blank coins in the following denominations: 1 penny with and without rim, 3 pence, 6 pence, half crown, half pound, pound with and without rim.

These pieces should be authenticated by an expert.

Interesting fact

The 1 Penny coin from the South African Republic (pre-Union) was designed by renowned British artist and engraver, George William de Saulles. He was also responsible for designing several other coins for the British Empire, including the famous 1902 Edward VII gold sovereign.
