Part of series of 4 coins (photos from Westminster Collections):
Sir Ernest Shackleton: best known for his three expeditions to the Antarctic. With ‘Discovery’ in 1901, Shackleton made it closer to the South Pole than anyone before, with ‘Nimrod’ in 1908 he climbed mouth Erebus and made many important scientific discoveries and, most famously, with ‘Endurance’ in 1914 where not one crew member died despite the ship sinking.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it commemorates Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914-1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which aimed to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast. The coin's design features a portrait of Shackleton and the expedition's ship, the Endurance, which was trapped and crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea. Despite the challenges and hardships faced by the expedition, Shackleton and his crew were able to survive and even rescue all of their crew members. This coin serves as a tribute to Shackleton's leadership and the bravery of his crew.
