Comment

This crown-sized dollar coin commemorates the Chatham Island or Black Robin. It is an endangered bird from the Chatham Islands off the east coast of New Zealand. It is closely related to the South Island Robin and was first described by Walter Buller in 1872.

The coin was issued in the usual square plastic Jewel Case. (40,000 Copies)

It was also included in the annual 7 coin Uncirculated Mint Set. (25,000 Copies)

A Sterling Silver version of the coin was also released (See link)

Interesting fact

The 1984 New Zealand $1 coin featuring Elizabeth II (2nd Portrait; Black Robin) is interesting because it was the first coin to feature a native New Zealand bird on the reverse side, the Black Robin. This design change was a departure from the traditional depiction of British monarchs on the obverse and reverse sides of New Zealand coins, and it marked a shift towards showcasing New Zealand's unique wildlife and natural heritage on its currency.
