Comment

The coins of this ruler are the first confirmable coins whose composition included zinc, meaning the composition changed from bronze to brass.

These coins were not cast continually through Jiajing's reign. Minting started in 1527, with 100,000 strings being cast (100,000,000 individual coins). Between 1541 and 1553, as well as from 1564 and beyond.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Jiajing Tongbao coin is that it was produced during a time of great economic and cultural growth in China, known as the "Great Prosperity" period. This era saw significant advancements in agriculture, industry, and trade, which led to an increase in the production of coins and other forms of currency. The Jiajing Tongbao coin, made of brass and weighing 3.62 grams, was one of the most widely used coins during this time and played an important role in facilitating economic transactions throughout the empire.
