Coins with Zhi with one dot (the left radical written with two strokes) are official Ming dynasty pieces; coins with Zhi with two dots (the left radical written with three strokes) are of a debated origin. While Hartill suggests these are all Vietnamese productions, metal analysis has been able to varify some examples as being genuine.

Interesting fact

The Hongzhi Tongbao coin was the first coin in Chinese history to feature a square hole in the center, which was designed to make it easier to string together as a form of currency. This unique design feature has made it a popular collector's item among numismatists and historians.
