The coins of this ruler are the first confirmable coins whose composition included zinc, meaning the composition changed from bronze to brass.These coins were not cast continually through Jiajing's reign. Minting started in 1527, with 100,000 strings being cast (100,000,000 individual coins). Between 1541 and 1553, as well as from 1564 and beyond.
Interesting fact
The Jiajing Tongbao coin was the first coin in Chinese history to feature a square hole in the center, which was designed to make it easier to string together multiple coins for ease of use in commercial transactions.
