Comment
These were issued between 1793 and 1796 by manufacturers, merchants and retailers as a way of creating small change, and could be redeemed at face value.MacKintosh, Inglis and Wilson were sail-cloth, sacking and bagging manufacturers in Inverness, Scotland.
A new designer, Conrad Heinrich Kuchler, engraved the dies, some of his earliest work for Soho Mint.
The stone (clach, in Gaelic) lay at the foot of the market cross in the heart of Inverness, and when women came down to the river to fill their wooden buckets (cudden), they found the stone a convenient place to rest their pails while exchanging gossip)
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Token ½ Penny (Inverness / MacKintosh, Inglis and Wilson's) 1796 from United Kingdom is that it was created as a result of a coinage crisis in the late 18th century. Due to a shortage of official coins, private companies and individuals began issuing their own tokens, like this one, to fill the gap. These tokens were widely accepted and used as currency, and many of them, like this one, featured unique designs and inscriptions.
