Comment

John Voss's Castle & Key Swansea Halfpenny 1796.
John Voss was a linen draper and mercer with a business in the Market, now Castle, Square, Swansea. He died in October 1818.
Tokens were issued because of a shortage of official small change and they appeared in the wage packets of the employees of the relevant firms and were widely circulated in restricted areas.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Token ½ Penny (Glamorganshire – Swansea / J. Voss) 1796 from United Kingdom is that it was issued during a time of severe coinage shortages in the late 18th century. The coin was minted by a private individual, J. Voss, and was used as a substitute for the official coins of the time, which were in short supply. This coin is a rare example of a privately minted token that was used as a form of currency during this period.
