Engraver --- Arnold Manufacturer --- Lutwyche Proprietors --- Shepheard & Co.

The writer of the "Bazaar Notes" states that Shepheard, Dove, Hammett & Co., were Hemp and Flax Manufacturers. Originally the firm consisted of eight persons, one being the Rev. William Winterbotham (see Newgate Token, Middlesex), at whose trial Benjamin Shepheard was one of the witnesses. The object of its foundation was to find employment for the poor, and to provide for the education and clothing of destitute children.

Reverse and edge variety exists

DH#7, Atkins#7 O: As last. R: The legend is continuous, and the loom smaller. E: Plain.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Token ½ Penny (Devon - Plymouth / Shepheard and Co) 1796 from United Kingdom is that it was issued during a time of severe coinage shortages in the late 18th century. To address this issue, many private companies and individuals, such as Shepheard and Co., were authorized to produce copper tokens that could be used as currency. This coin, with its unique design and weight, is a testament to the resourcefulness and resilience of the people of the United Kingdom during a period of economic challenge.
