Comment
The Dromedaris is one of the three vessels which brought Jan van Riebeeck and his small group of people to South Africa from Holland in 1652 in order to establish a refreshment station on behalf of the Dutch East India Company.
The bronze composition changed very slightly halfway through this type:
1937-41 Copper 0.955, Tin 0.030, Zinc 0.015
1942-47 Copper 0.950, Tin 0.005, Zinc 0.045
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1937-1947 South African ½ Penny coin is that it features a unique design element that sets it apart from other coins of the same denomination. The coin's obverse (front) side bears the image of King George VI, while the reverse (back) side features a sprig of acacia, a native South African plant. This distinctive design was introduced in 1937 and continued until the coin's production ceased in 1947.
