The arrows on both sides of the date mean that the coin weight was reduced (to 19¹∕₅ grains) from the previous issue (20⁵∕₈ grains).
"Half dime" is the name for the silver 5 cents coins, later base-metal issues are known as "Nickels."

These coins saw frequent circulation in Nicaragua.

Interesting fact

The interesting fact about the 1853-1855 Seated Liberty Half Dime is that it was the first coin to feature the motto "In God We Trust" on its reverse side. This motto was added to the coin in response to increasing religious sentiment in the United States at the time and has since become a standard feature on many US coins.
