Interesting fact
The obverse (front) side of the coin features a portrait of the Greek goddess Athena, while the reverse (back) side features a depiction of a griffin, which was a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The griffin was a symbol of protection and guardianship, and its presence on the coin may have been intended to convey the idea of Abdera being under the protection of Athena.
