The obverse (front) side of the Abdera Stater features a portrait of the mythical creature, Protes, who was a son of the sea-god, Poseidon. Protes was often depicted as a youthful figure with a dolphin's tail, symbolizing the city's maritime connections and the riches that came from the sea.
