Comment

Magistracy of Epaminondas.

This coin is signed by Thebes's greatest statesman and general, Epaminondas (c. 419/411-362 BC). He was responsible for the massive defeat of Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra in 371, as well as the later Spartan defeat at Mantinea in 362.

Interesting fact

The Stater coin of Epaminondas from Thebes (Boeotia) was minted during a time of great political and military change in ancient Greece. The coin's obverse features the profile of Epaminondas, who was a prominent Theban statesman and military leader, while the reverse depicts a Boeotian shield and spear. This coin was likely used to promote Epaminondas' political and military agenda, and its design reflects the importance of military power and leadership during this time period.
