Comment

There has been much controversy on dating Populonian coins, and as such, the date ranges my vary per source.

The second Gorgoneion series was struck using Populonia's fourth silver standard, which is equal to the third silver standard except with the weights of all denomination being halved.

Interesting fact

The Gorgoneion series II: sepia coin from Populonia (Etruria) features a unique design on its reverse side. It depicts a gorgon's head, which was a common symbol in ancient Etruscan art and mythology. The gorgon's head was believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and protect the coin's owner from harm. This design element not only adds to the coin's aesthetic appeal but also highlights the cultural significance of the Etruscan civilization.
