Comment
There has been much controversy on dating Populonian coins, and as such, the date ranges my vary per source. The second Gorgoneion series was struck using Populonia's fourth silver standard, which is equal to the third silver standard except with the weights of all denomination being halved.
Interesting fact
The Gorgoneion series II: octopus coin from Populonia (Etruria) features an image of the mythical creature Gorgon, with snakes protruding from her head, on the obverse side. The reverse side of the coin depicts an octopus, which is a symbol of the sea god Poseidon. This imagery suggests that the coin was used for maritime trade or had some connection to the sea.
