Comment

Social currency (commune) resulting from the Luxembourg - Bar monetary union, struck at the mint of Saint Mihiel. Very rare piece, four known copies, two are kept in the medal cabinet of Brussels and one in Luxembourg, the last was sold by Probst in 1989 for approximately €10,000. Coin undated but whose strike may be located precisely between March 9, 1343, date on which the agreement was concluded and December 24, 1344, date of the death of Count Henry IV.

This coin was described for the first time by M. De la Fontaine in the review of Belgian numismatics in 1845. The copy described and illustrated (pp. 361-362, pl.4) was found in 1842 in Freudenburg in the former archbishopric of Trier. Treasury listed by Weiller under number B23.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued during the reign of Jean the Blind, who was the Count of Luxembourg from 1343 to 1344. Despite his short reign, Jean the Blind played a significant role in the history of Luxembourg and the surrounding region. He was known for his military campaigns and his efforts to strengthen the economy and infrastructure of the county. The coin itself is made of silver and weighs 3.72 grams, making it a valuable and collectible piece for numismatists.
