Comment

Kings of England (973-1066), Eadgar (959-975), Reform coinage (973-975), Small cross type.

Derby mint; Asulfr, moneyer.

In 973 Eadgar introduced a new coinage. A royal portrait now became a regular feature and the reverses normally have a cruciform pattern with the name of the mint in addition to that of the moneyer.

Interesting fact

The Eadgar (Reform coinage) Penny, minted between 973 and 975 AD, was the first English coin to feature a standardized design and inscription. It was introduced by King Edgar the Peaceful as part of his currency reform, which aimed to create a uniform system of coinage across England. The coin's design featured a cross on the obverse (front) side and a crowned bust of the king on the reverse (back) side. This design became the standard for English coins for centuries to come.
