Comment

Kings of All England (924-1158), Eadgar (959-975), Pre-reform coinage (959-973), Portrait type.
London mint; Beorhtsige, moneyer. Struck circa 959-967/8.

King in Mercia and Northumbria from 957, and King of all England 959-975, Eadgar was crowned King of England at Bath in 973 in the first coronation of an English King. His reign was largely free from Viking invasions, leading him to be given the sobriquet of 'The Peaceful'.

Interesting fact

The Eadgar (Portrait type) Penny, minted between 959-973, is a rare example of a silver penny from medieval England. It was issued during the reign of King Edgar the Peaceful, who was known for his efforts to promote education, art, and religion. The coin features a portrait of the king on one side and a cross on the other, symbolizing his commitment to Christianity. Despite its age, some of these coins have been well-preserved and are highly sought after by collectors today.
