Comment

Anglo-Saxon middle period (c.780-973), Kings of Mercia (757-880), Beornwulf (823-825), Group I, East Anglia mint.

Beornwulf's short reign as King of Mercia saw the collapse of Mercia's supremacy over the other kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy. Coins minted during Beornwulf's reign are very rare, with only around 25 known examples.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Standard circulation coin Penny - Beornwulf (Group I; East Anglia) (823-825) from Kingdom of Mercia (Kingdoms of British Isles and Frisia) made of Silver weighing 1.36 g is that it features a unique design that sets it apart from other coins of its time. The coin's obverse (front) side features a crowned bust of King Beornwulf, while the reverse (back) side features a cross with a pellet in each angle, surrounded by a circular inscription. This design was a departure from the more common designs found on other coins of the time, which often featured religious symbols or images of other rulers.
