Comment

Aloysius Gonzaga (reverse image) was the first son of Ferrante Gonzaga, first marquis of Castiglione.  Despite his position as heir to the title, he chose a religious life, and died while tending to victims of a plague epidemic in Rome at the age of 23.  He was beatified in 1605, hence his title on the coin, Beatus Aloysius, and canonized as a saint in 1726.

Interesting fact

The Parpagliola - Carlo ND (1678-1680) coin from Castiglione Delle Stiviere (Italian States) is notable for its unique design, which features a distinctive crowned shield on the obverse side, surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves. This design was used during the reign of Duke Carlo IV of Mantua, who ruled from 1678 to 1680. The coin's reverse side features the coat of arms of the Duchy of Mantua, with the motto "Soli Deo Gloria" (Glory to God Alone) inscribed above it.
